Johnson grew up in Boise, Idaho, attended Whittier College in Los Angeles where he earned degrees in business administration and political science in 3.5 years, then UCLA Producer's Program. Then, started out as the Green Power Ranger on the TV series followed by working in physical production and development for Peter Guber's Mandalay Pictures before leaving to independently produce, forming Pretty Dangerous Film, joining Night Fox Entertainment as President of Production.
