The life of Missie's family in the West has been settled down. Missie continues her passion of teaching and takes care of their young daughter Kathy while Willie and their sons Jeff and Matthew work to expand their family ranch. The movie, based on the novel by Janette Oke, shows how time and belief can help deal with tragedies. These solutions, however, when applied to the LaHayes' particular tragedy, make for a stagnantly morose plot.

The stop-and-start pacing indicates careful planning for the easy insertion of commercials. And few of the actors look entirely at home in the period setting.

The pacing is a bit slow, and the references to faith at first seem a little heavy-handed, but the movie comes together as you warm up to the characters.
