Hotel Cortez is home to the strange and unusual. Its owner The Countess is a bloodsucking designer. This time, it features two serial killers, The Ten Commandments killer and The Addiction Demon that roams the hotel and murders at will. This catches the eyes of Homicide detective Bentley in this horror series.

Executive producers/writers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have clearly confused gore with fear, and they're not the same. There's plenty of the former, and the later is, sadly, missing.

Disturbing us is the point, of course, but good horror stories go beyond grotesqueries and gore. American Horror Story: Hotel may do that, but I won't know; I don't plan to spend another night there.

They're pushing boundaries. Screw your need for normalcy. You can get that anywhere. And, on that level, Hotel works. The question of quality comes down to the tolerance you have for style over substance.

In short, what's old is new again, a theme many hotels have used in their day. For Horror Story, heading into its fifth season, it sure feels due.

As ever, the set design is spot on and brilliantly atmospheric, but ultimately this feels too similar to other, better series to really stand out.
