Better Things - Season 2
The second season revolves around the dramatic when Sam gets brutally honest with the man she's been dating for three weeks. Sam feels he's become excessively needy, so she dumps him in a parking lot full of onlookers. After, Sam has plans to go to Santa Barbara with a group of friends to meet Sunny's new, rich boyfriend, but upon arriving, Sunny's boyfriend tries his hand at matchmaking and tries to hook Sam up with one of his friends. Sam's reaction is to turn, run, and never come back. She gets a crappy hotel room by the beach and a bottle of wine, and later she returns home to her family.

Sam Fox is an absolute badass, talking the talk and walking the walk. We've never seen a character like her before, and her worldview has never been realized this clearly.

It's hard to break down why this season of Better Things is so fantastic... It's about those quicksilver moments, and the show's ability to create an emotional impact without ever being even slightly manipulative.

There's only so much pity one can muster for a successful woman who owns two houses, has the means to hire housekeepers, and nevertheless sees herself as a beleaguered, unappreciated underdog.
September 13, 2017
One of last year's best new comedies, Better Things is darkly funny.

Adlon is very good at depicting Sam in mid-mixed emotions; she has become a better actor, relying on more than just the poker-faced sarcasm that she does so well.
September 13, 2017
Adlon's whole gestalt, her black clothes and her raspy voice, her tough love and her exasperation, make the sweet beats feel like treats instead of a bellyache, like the largess of life, not the brainstorms of a clever writers' room.

As good as the first season was, "Better Things" (FX, 10 p.m.) gets even better as its second season starts...
September 14, 2017
Dreamier and more wistful in style but with the same caustic sense of humor, the show takes more risks with structure and technique.

What anchors Better Things is the warmth Sam feels for her family. What makes it works are the tiny human moments.
