Season 2 introduces a new series of comedy, as Hana and Tom both have good news. Now, Derek Anthony's father goes on a date with Nan Tom in a short while, and Derek and the Broad Hill gang decide to go on a trip to the London Zoo. It seems this day will be very fun for Derek at all, where he meets giraffes, penguins, and aardvarks which is quite unusual.

The new series of Derek opens with brilliant comic scenes about spiders, electrocution and sex between clowns and chimps but, by the end of the half hour, viewers just might be quietly weeping.

Settling back into Derek after so much time away was like pulling on one of Derek's brightly-coloured sweaters: it's warm and comfortable and you never want to take it off again.

An episode of The Office or Extras would be wasted on Derek; he's completely happy when he's watching an online video of little piggies and bunnies doing cute things. Derek has all the creative ambition of one of those videos.

Unfortunately, Derek is less comedy and more tragedy, the biggest tragedy being Gervais's flailing attempt at a follow-up to earlier successes.

Though "Derek" still has moments of sweetness, much of the romance from its initial go-round has vanished, replaced by crude jokes.

Leave it to Derek to make grabbing a used pregnancy test from the garbage, holding it up and announcing someone else's pregnancy a heartwarming bit of TV.
