The sixth season begins with a series of events while Martin and Louisa appear to be getting married during this period. Now, Martin is angry with PC Penhale, who mistakenly believes he will be the best person while Louise seems to be getting late. At these moments, the lawmaker questions whether or not it will appear.

Actor Martin Clunes is now so accomplished as this character, I am sure he could not put a plaster on a simple cut. Delightful stuff. It's not trendy but we love it.

The on-again, off-again relationship between Martin and Louisa was teased to the point of exasperation by writers... To some extent this continues even throughout Series Six, but the show seems to have rediscovered its rhythm.

Odd to say for such an enduring series but it feels like 'Doc Martin' still struggles with its tone... Still, Clunes is likeably lugubrious.

This enduring hit for ITV is by now rather flat... Ultimately what redeems Doc Martin is Clunes's ability to show what one might call expressive deadpan. It's almost up there with Roger Moore's eyebrows.

It's a rare thing but the pleasure of Doc Martin (ITV) is in the minor characters, the pepperings of humanity who surround Martin Clunes's borderline sociopathic central figure... But it goes off the rails when it strays from its quirky community beat.
