Surgeon Alex Reid finds herself in a state of shock when her charismatic fiance, Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris, ends up in a coma. The show follows the life of Harris in his coma state, and Reid dealing with patients, and 'hoping' that he will survive.

At times it's hard to tell which is less compelling - the relationships among the hospital staff or the brief glimpses of patients' life-and-death battles, which culminate quickly, if not always satisfactorily.

A sober, intelligent, placidly paced drama as only the Canadians can make. Saving Hope is better than probably even NBC realizes.

The characters are so appealing that I wonder whether the show wouldn't have been fine without the weirdness.

Though the show promises to deliver a new twist on the genre, Saving Hope's focus on recycled hospital drama storylines and one-note characters feel more like a Very Special episode of Private Practice.
